Frequently asked
- How do banks compound fixed deposits?
- Almost all Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly. The calculator defaults to quarterly and lets you switch to monthly, half-yearly or annual if your bank differs.
- Why is RD maturity lower than an FD of the same total amount?
- In an RD each instalment only earns interest for the time remaining after it is deposited. The last instalment earns almost nothing. An FD puts the entire amount to work from day one.
- Is FD interest taxable?
- Yes. Interest from FDs and RDs is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and banks deduct TDS once interest crosses the threshold for the year. The maturity figures here are before tax.
